Strategic Designer Revolutionizing Meetings with Real Time Live Illustration

Imagine your least favorite meeting: A room filled with streams of consciousness raging, ears listening just enough to get a foothold on the next speaking opportunity, and focus ebbing as the drawl of circular thinking and circular logic dive-bomb. Sound familiar?  We’ve all lived it.

In today’s fast-paced business world, meetings often devolve into competitions of many voices, ending in quagmires o f confusion. All too often, the loudest or most expensive voice ends up penning the meeting’s action items. But what if there was a way to direct the minds of a group to literally be in lockstep on the same page?

Enter the Strategic Designer: A Revolutionary Approach to Meeting Facilitation

My name is Matt Orley, and I’ve been recognized and labeled as a strategic designer long before my work in live  illustration began.   I’ve been drawn to whiteboards in meeting rooms since my first career job. Using marker and paper today as my canvases today, I revel in my role  in translating  meeting conversation  into visual representations.

The Power of Visual Representation in Meetings

Creating a visual map of a conversation in real-time, also known as graphic recording, is imperative to keeping a conversation on track. This approach offers several key benefits:

1. Reinforcement of Ideas

When the ideas of a conversation participant are drawn for all to see, they are given a level of permanence and acceptance. These visual elements act as visible launching pads on which to build further conversation and direction. When an idea is mentioned anew in other contexts, the imagery around said idea grows, brightens, and gets bigger (thanks to the one holding the marker) , further cementing its importance in the discussion.

2. Combating Circular Conversations

One of the most frustrating aspects of meetings is the tendency to revisit topics multiple times. With a visual record, participants can self-correct with a pointed finger at the panel, saying, “We’ve already talked about that.” Being able to move on while seeing where a previous topic stands is crucial—not only to give credence to recurring topics and recurring voices but also to quiet those voices for what’s next.

3. Identifying Patterns, Matches, and Causality

As a strategic designer, I don’t just illustrate ideas; I draw relationships between them. Using containers, arrows, and flow components adds significant value to any conversation illustration. This practice can lead to possible innovation if further explored. The act of drawing through a concept, plan, or problem is an incredible aid in identifying potential connections, new solutions, or uncovering dependencies. It allows the experts in the room to step back from the trees and see the forest drawn out for them.

The Strategic Designer’s Approach to Meeting Facilitation

My role as a strategic designer goes beyond simple illustration. I help guide the conversation by:

  • Highlighting recurring themes and ideas
  • Visualizing complex concepts for easier understanding
  • Facilitating connections between seemingly unrelated topics
  • Ensuring all voices are heard and represented visually
  • Keeping the meeting on track and focused on key objectives

This broad experience—getting to be a fly on the walls of technology, society, and finance—offers a pulse on the world from multiple facets. I WILL STRIVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, I WILL NOT JUST LISTEN FOR BUZZWORDS.
